Welcome! Here you will find educational content on the arms, armor and material culture of the Medieval Era. Special care is given to providing you the most accurate and researched information I have available while busting the myths and misconceptions that surround this often romanticized time period. I am a living history interpreter specializing in late 14th and early 15th century material culture, but the channel spans much more than that. Enjoy!
Medieval Material Culture - Quality: Then vs Now
A common point of confusion within medieval reenactment is the assumption that low-quality reenactment products are approximating low-quality historical objects, but this is often fundamentally untrue in important ways. Let's dive in and examine how quality differs in the modern versus historical context and how we can approach this subject more critically.

The Palazzo Ducale Bascinet
Переглядів 76 тис.4 роки тому
The ca.1400 great bascinet at the Palazzo Ducale in Venice, Italy is one of the most curious medieval helmets to survive to the present day. Renowned armorer Robert "Mac" MacPherson has built the world's most accurate reproduction of this helmet with the help of Dr. Nicolas Baptiste, to better understand the real object and perhaps shed some light on the realities of a very misunderstood and of...
The Importance of Capturing a Medieval Aesthetic

The Reversal of Myth: Overcorrecting Arms and Armor Misconceptions
Переглядів 49 тис.6 років тому
There are a lot of myths and misconceptions surrounding the arms and armor of Medieval Europe, and as a community of enthusiasts we've spent a lot of time and energy trying to debunk those myths. Sometimes we go too far though, and in our efforts to distance ourselves from the common myths, we create some of our own! Besagews, Rondels for the Shoulder and Armpit

The gap between the breastplate and shoulder armor, or the opening in the armpit can sometimes be left vulnerable by even sophisticated plate armors. The besagew, and other forms of rondel for the shoulder can be an effective solution to this potential problem. Fixing Problems When Things Don't Work Quite Right

Every living historian and re-enactor will inevitably run into an issue with their kit at some point. Sometimes reproductions we make just don't work like we expect them to. Sometimes new additions cause unforeseen problems elsewhere. Here's how I've dealt with a few issues that have come up as I've made some modifications to my harness over this last season. thought i had; almost all these helmets dont have face protection. face protection means sacrificing vision. possibly in a large well trained army, the training and trust you have in your fellow soldier was enough to make up for the lack of vision, but in poor militias where they are not well trained, perhaps the visibility from not having face protection was worth it since you are more alone in a fight.
It's really fascinating learning about those specific little tailoring tricks that were used to give mail the necessary range of motion without making the armor extra baggy and thus heavier than desired. Thats been something I've wondered about since I came to the realization that mail can't function quite like fabric does because iron rings, in effect, won't stretch like a fiber weave will.
Even in modern armor, accidents are not uncommon.
appears to me that chainmail will be a trend again with all the muslim stabbings
@3:41 That helmet appeared in Nioh 2.
"Juicy arteries" words I'd never though I'd hear from a video like this.
really good detailed video! very helpful for figuring out how to draw armor as well i always see the too-long breastplate in video games and ofc it always looks a bit funny, cause to make it still move with the character, they just.. make the metal stretchy/bendy lmao and ofc trying to make a costume/cosplay with that too-long breastplate design is a mess; even if its flexible foam its still gonna be super uncomfortable
Weird, most fotos of sobatons on the internet are of sabatons that have the next piece underlaping the previous where as these are overlapping the previous This is also how I designed mine, an my gauntlets are the opposite, underlaping
It was really, really informative for me. Before this video i didn't understood why i don't see hinges on that armet's cheeks, how he opens. Thank you, m'lord, may the Lord watch over you
Talk about limited field of view….that is a big trade off in combat…..
its been a while and im assuming you wont be coming back so i would like to thank you for being such a consummate professional here on youtube, i knew going into each video that at the very least it would plunge me into a specific aspect of something and i would leave with a broader perspective which is invaluable here on youtube the land of clicks and "edu-tainment"

Very interesting! I love these videos.
You are remarkably well spoken and I could kick myself for finding you years late!!! Time to binge watch and catch up!
Thank you this was very helpful.
This took the shine off of my Steele how do I get that shin back
you would need to progress through finer and finer grits until you achieve the level of shine you're after
Thank you for this video. Excellent. I was very curious about how the decorations were done and here I found the answers!
Great vid, I love your channel❤ Could you do more on the venetian bascinet? Why don't they have any breathing holes?
I was curious if visor locks were a thing. Not a lot of information on them on the internet that I can find. Thank you.
Thansk for sharing....is great...
These were not for fighting. You cannot see shit from that narrow slit. There are types not made for human facial features, also. These are for protection and from the time humans shared a common enemy,; an electrostatic charge build up of mother nature.
Update?
who in 2024?
Imagine using the beak of the visor and hit your enemies with it, that could been so funny
Please come back please
What would you say the weight of that is?
Did you make the arming cap yourself?
I miss this channel, I hope you’re doing well and come back to UA-cam eventually!
I MISS YOU SO MUCH PLEASE COME BACK WE NEED YOU 😭😭😭
Oh this is lovely
How do you keep in shape, to be able to keep your armor fitted to you? What do you do?
Horse, the cars of old
It’s good to see you can get a full harness without any arming points on the gambeson. Figuring out how many arming points to get and where all those laces go has been a real sticking point for me, but it looks like most of the armor you have is self supporting or links up directly with the other plates.

@@m.s.79 Nooooooo😢
The knight set from elden is so historically accurate but also isn't too plain looking. It has a closed helm without breathing holes, plate armor with a blue gambeson underneath that sports a golden design along the fringes. The armor and helmet also have simple ornate engravings on them. Its my favorite set in elden ring!
The infantry breastplates are still incredible works of art in my opinion. The the fact they are polished metal means they were worth a good bit on their day, unless that polishing was done by some silly Victorians way later on.
i can't believe people really think every piece of real surviving armor has to be perfect, THEY WERE MADE IN THE 1400's CMON
Thanks for this amazing video! Im trying to make a set of medieval armor from cardboard and i was wondering this exact same thing. So close helmet is it
Si , con aceite mineral y talco para proteger el acero tanto la armadura y las espada de la humedad y la corrosión, ya que el armero que me hizo mi armadura y espadas me recomendó aceite mineral y talco y me ha conservado lo mio bien
Where did you purchase your dublit
I made the doublet
@@KnyghtErrant could you plz make a video going into more depth about the breastplate without the extra plates on the bottom
This broad kettle helmet reminds me of the Portuguese Conquistadores while their Spanish rivals wore the Curved Morion Helmet.

Fantastic video, thanks. I was just beginning to draw up the pictures myself for the same purpose, and you saved me from doing a far worse job of it :)
It gives "Juggernaut" vibes
Why didn't they put breaths in the bever ?
